Read the passage and choose the correct
anwser in each of the following questions.
The most dominant and
reliable features of facial expressions provide a constant channel of
communication. They can be shifty and evasive; convey hate, fear, and guilt; or
express confidence, love, and support.
Referred to as
"mirrors of the soul" our eyes serve as the major decisive factor in ___(1)__
the spoken words. The eyes of the man converse as much as their tongues, with
the advantage that the ocular dialect needs ___2__ dictionary, but it is
understood all over the world. When the eyes say one thing, and the tongue
another, a practiced man relies on eyes. Except for extremely shy individuals,
most people look for social acceptance by studying the eyes of others. Eyes
also can ____3__ indicate a positive or a negative relationship. People tend to
look longer and more often at the people whom they trust, respect and care
about than at those whom they doubt or dislike. Normal eye dilation is not
under control of the individual. Personally characteristics such as
introversion and extroversion also influence eye behavior. Eye behavior seems ____(4)__
particular importance and is generally used to indicate whether one is open to
communication. This can be observed when a teacher asks the class a question:
students who think they know the answer will generally look at the teacher
___(5)__students who do not know the answer will usually try to avoid eye
contact.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer
Sometimes people add to what they
say even when they don't talk. Gestures are the "silent language" of
every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what
we want to say. It is important to know the body language of every country or
we may be misunderstood. In the United States, people greet each other with a
handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If the
handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may
place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet
a friend with a hug.
Space is important to Americans.
When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half
feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly.
Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back
to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say,
"Pardon me." or "Excuse me." Americans like to look the
other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don't do so, it means you
are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you are stare at
someone, it is not polite. For Americans, thumbs-up means yes, very good, or
well done. Thumbs down means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to
head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your
hands as if you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at
things but not at people with the hand and index finger. Americans shake their
index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when
they admire them. Learning a culture's body language is sometimes confusing. If you don't know what to
do, the safest thing to do is to smile.

Read the
passage and choose the best anwser to each question.
Communication in general is
process of sending and receiving messages that enables humans to share
knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Although we usually identify communication
with speech, communication is composed of two dimensions – verbal and nonverbal.
Nonverbal communication has been
defined as communication without words. It includes apparent behaviors such as
facial expressions, eyes, touching, tone of voice, as well as less obvious
messages such as dress, posture and spatial distance between two or more
people.
Activity or inactivity, words or
silence all have message value: they influence others and these others, in
turn, respond to these communications and thus they are communicating.
Commonly, nonverbal communication
is learned shortly after birth and practiced and refined throughout a person’s
lifetime. Children first learn nonverbal expressions by watching and imitating,
much as they learn verbal skills.
Young children know far more than
they can verbalize and are generally more adept at reading nonverbal
cues than adults are because of their limited verbal skills and their recent
reliance on the nonverbal to communicate. As children develop verbal skills,
nonverbal channels of communication do’ not cease to exist although become
entwined in the total communication process.
